Australian research has found that vehicle design improvements have reduced vibrations in a truck cabin and masked engine and external noise and, because of this, drivers have become insulated, affecting their perception of speeding. This has led to some drivers reporting they were unaware they were speeding.
Additional long-term heavy vehicle speeding studies undertaken by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority between 2003 and 2011 found that there were 12,107 heavy vehicles caught via speed cameras exceeding the speed limit by 15 km/h. Those figures average out to over 120 a month, or roughly 30 heavy vehicles a week. Alarmingly, all those caught speeding were actually doing at least 23km over the speed limit!
Given that excess speed in heavy vehicles is a major cause of serious injury and death you can see why a speed limiter for trucks and other heavy vehicles is an important, life-saving technology.
